Our testing process

  • We sign up for the product ourselves, usually on the plan most small businesses would buy.
  • We build a real test site or project — for example a restaurant site, a service business site or a small store.
  • We take our own dated screenshots and notes at every step.
  • We check prices and plans on the vendor's site and record the date we checked them.
  • A second person reviews the article and checks the facts before it is published.

How we score

Products are scored out of 10 on criteria that matter to small businesses. Each category of product has its own weights, which we publish with every review.

  • Ease of use — how quickly a non-technical owner gets a good result
  • Design and flexibility — templates, customisation, mobile quality
  • Features — what is included on the plan we tested
  • SEO and performance — technical SEO controls and page speed
  • Value for money — real cost over the first year, including add-ons
  • Support and reliability — response times and uptime during testing

What we don't do

  • We don't accept payment for reviews or rankings.
  • We don't use vendor press images as proof of testing.
  • We don't change a score because a product has (or doesn't have) an affiliate program.

Keeping reviews current

We review every article at least every 90 days and whenever prices or plans change. Each article shows when it was published, when it was last updated and what changed.
